About ADKOF

What is your company about?

We are 3 women who are obsessed with beautiful things.  Bernice and I (Rachel) design and make jewelry, and Nicole designs and makes hair accessories (which we lovingly refer to as Hair Flair).  We use a variety of materials, but we all seem to be attracted to things with nostalgia, all things vintage, and of course sparkle and bling.  Our pieces are all handmade and unique.  We aren't the kind of company that makes 150+ pieces of one style.  Buying one of our pieces means you'll be getting something one of a kind.  We dabble in lots of different styles.  Some of our things are breath taking, show stopping pieces!  Something that will turn heads and have everyone asking where you got your accessories.  Others are understated and simple.  Perfect for that jeans and a t-shirt kind of day.  We like jewelry that is versatile and "layer-able", so you'll find that lots of our stuff can be mixed and matched and worn in lots of different ways.  Nicole's Hair Flair has designs which would be gorgeous with formalwear but also just perfect for throwing your hair in a ponytail and dressing it up with a little flower pin or headband.

Who are the team members?

Without going into too much detail (we'll save that for a different post!), we are 3 women from the same family.  Bernice is the mother-in-law, followed by me (Rachel)...I married her son Jonathan in 2007.  I've known Bernice for 7+ years now.  Nicole came next marrying Bernice's younger son Patrick in 2009.  All three of us get along great which is an improbability in this day and age.  So many people just don't connect with their "in-laws" but we are all 3 blessed to have a great relationship.

How did you get started?

A Different Kind of Flair got it's start officially in 2010, but we've been making jewelry together for a lot longer than that.  Bernice was sort of the "guinea pig" in the endeavor!  She went into a bead shop in Bethany, Oklahoma looking for someone who could help her repair a piece of jewelry of hers.  She was quickly swept up by the shop owner who taught her how to do it herself right there in the shop.  The shop is called Elements Beadery and it is still our go-to shop when we need supplies or just have a hankering to bead shop!  When Jonathan and I (Rachel) were getting married, Bernice offered to help us with our bridal party accessories since she had learned so much from Pat at Elements.  So all of our bridal party wore beautiful jewelry made special by my new mother-in-law.  She even helped my mom make and design her jewelry for our wedding!  After Jonathan and I got married, Bernice and I found that beading and jewelry making had become a bonding thing for us.  I looked forward to (I still do) going to Oklahoma (Jonathan and I lived in Houston) and beading with Bernice.  We laugh and talk and just spend quality time together creating beautiful things.  Not too long later, Nicole started joining us.  Though her specialty is more in the fabric realm, she has an awesome eye for color and was always  pulling amazing beads and helping us design.  We were pleasantly surprised to find her knack for making hair accessories and we just HAD to make her stuff a part of our quickly growing collection.

For years we had people stop us and ask us where we got the stuff we were wearing.  Our response was always that we made it.  To which their response was almost always, "Well can you make something for me??  Do you guys have a website?  You guys should start selling your stuff!".  So in 2010, after years of being told we should, we broke down and started our business.  Our name, A Different Kind of Flair, came from a comment Bernice made on one the beadery trips.  She said, "You know, our stuff is classic and classy...but it has a different kind of flair."  She's so right!  We just couldn't think of a better title than something that describes our pieces exactly!  Our first business endeavors were right out of Bernice's home.  We called them "trunk shows" and we invited friends and family in the surrounding area.  But as time has passed, and miles separate us, we've decided to try our hand at the internet business realm.  So that's our story in a nutshell!

Bernice, Nicole, and I will be posting on this site with our new designs and ideas and giveaways eventually!  We will each give a personal bio at some point too so you can see what each of our personal journeys have been.  For now, we will leave you with this little teaser.  September 21st will mark the official opening of our Etsy.com site, and you can purchase our designs directly from there.  In the meantime, in order to avail yourself of special deals and discounts, follow this blog, our twitter handle (www.twitter.com/DifferentKindof), and our Facebook site (www.facebook.com/adifferentkindofflair) or our Pinterest.com board (follow Rachel Womack, Bernice Womack, or Nicole Womack) We will preview our stuff before it officially goes on sale in all of those places so you can go ahead and stake your claims before they go on sale.  We will be posting coupon codes VERY soon, so check back with us!  Thanks for stopping by!
